1. 关于水资源
Study the following cartoon carefully and write an essay in which you should describe the set of drawings, interpret its meaning, and give comments on this phenomenon.
You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

It is widely believed that fresh water will never be used up due to its rich resources such as rain, rivers and wells. In fact, such belief is unfortunately wrong and possibly dangerous. As is depicted in the picture, we are facing serious shortage of fresh water, especially in the northern part of China. The land in some areas has become barren and there is no water coming from the pumps. Definitely, the picture reminds us of the serious situation we are confronting.
Short as it is, people still waste it. With the growth of population and industry, the amount of fresh water in use is also growing rapidly. It is estimated that if not controlled, fresh water will be used up by the next century. Another dangerous factor is the water pollution, which aggravates the seriousness of fresh water shortage.
It is no use only being aware of the shortage of fresh water. It is never too late if we act right now. The first important measure is to protect our water resources form being polluted. Educating people to save water in daily life is of similar significance. Techniques such as recycling waste water and converting sea water into drinkable water are especially needed in dry areas. It is only when these measures are put into practice can the shortage of fresh water be solved.

2. 关于空气污染
Study the following cartoon carefully and write an essay in which you should describe the set of drawings, interpret its meaning, and point out dangers from air pollution.
You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

Air pollution, which can be seen in many parts of the world, is one of the serious problems the world’s people are facing today. As is indicated from the picture, the poisonous gas coming from the factories, automobiles and houses pollute the air without which cannot live. There is no denying that many people as well as scientists have been aware of dangers air pollution brings to people.
The first category of dangers it has brought is the harm to our health. Nearly everyone knows that serious air pollution irritate our eyes, causes us to cough and makes us get more serious diseases. Air pollution is not only dangerous to people but also detrimental to our surroundings and our daily life. It corrodes our building, damages crops and forests and causes both airplane and auto accidents because it cuts down visibility. Furthermore, the pollutants in the air may travel through the air with wind; as a result, air pollution can spread from city to city, even from country to county. So air pollution is really a global problem.
As can be seen from the above dangers, air pollution cost our human beings a great deal of money. Therefore, it must be worthwhile to spend more money and efforts on air pollution control.

3. 关于发展与环境
Study the following drawing carefully and write an essay in which you should
1) describe the drawing,,
2) analyze the aim of the painter of the drawing , and
3) suggest counter-measures.
You should write about 160-200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.(20points)

As is vividly betrayed in the drawing above, people are striving for the tremendous increase of GDP (gross domestic product) at the cost of our environment. The blue sky is being severely polluted and human life is being threatened, which is most thought-provoking and worth discussing among the general public for the time being.
The main purpose of the painter of the drawing above can be briefly stated as follows. To begin with, it is high time that we realized the fact that our living environment and some natural resources are being destroyed in the blind pursue of GDP increase. At present, the ecology of our planet can hardly support the continuous expansion of heavy-polluting, high-consuming and low-profit production pattern. What’s more, it is quite necessary that we have an objective understanding of the relationship between GDP increase and the ecological environment. The GDP increase which is achieved at the cost of sacrificing human living environment and destroying our valuable natural resources (some of the resources are not renewable) is meaningless at all. In sum, the blind craze for GDP increase must be stopped.
In my view, counter-measures should be taken to reverse the grim situation. On the one hand, relevant laws and regulations must be set up by government to ensure a rational balance between GDP increase and our living environment. On the other hand, a public education campaign should be launched to make people have a good knowledge of green GDP. Only in these ways can we have a sustainable development and a harmonious society.

4. 关于能源与环境
Study the following picture carefully and write an essay. Your essay should cover these three points:
1) explain the picture,
2) give reasons for this phenomenon, and
3) make your conclusion.
You should write 160~200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

The cartoon depicts a vivid scene in which two strong cyclists riding two similar bicycles labeled “ENERGY” and “ENVIRONMENT” respectively, are furiously dashing head on against each other. The most striking features of the cartoon may be the dripping sweat of the cyclists and the single front wheel shared by the two bikes, which show the intensity and inevitability of their struggle.
The main idea of the cartoon is apparent: the need to produce and consume energy comes into acute conflict with the need to preserve the environment. The rapid expansion of populations and their increasing demands for a better living lie at the root of deterioration of the natural environment.
Can we find a way to get out of the awkward situation? I presume it of vital importance for man to realize that he is an integral part of nature, the destruction of which means the perishing of himself. I also have confidence in modern technology and genius which will enable man to change present energy patterns to avoid environmental pollution. The appearances of ecological products promise a bright prospect of settling the energy-environment contradiction.

Study the following drawing carefully and write an essay to
1) describe the drawing,
2) deduce the purpose of the painter of the drawing, and
3) suggest counter-measures.
You should write about 160—200 words neatly on the ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

企业社会责任 缺乏社会责任

When the issue of poisonous milk powder gains an overwhelming focus from the public, what are these malefactors doing? As we can see from the depiction, enterprise, milk station, milk cow and even grass are trying to find someone scapegoating for this credit crisis, in my view point, that’s nothing to do with the credit but the problem of responsibility.
Responsibility is a keyword that we should never disregard, defined not only as the courage to face every foreseeable risk, but as the braveness to entail every malpractice when it really takes place as well. The causes of the shortage of responsibility or even conscience may be as follows. Firstly, inner cause ascribing probably to the destructive influence emanating from the decay of morality may result in the over-materialism .Furthermore, outerly ,deficient supervisal gives rise to the fearless adventurer who is at the risk of anything ,not to say to deviate from his own liability ,to pursue as many as profits. A case in point is the Melamine-laced Milk Incident which almost destroyed the whole of China’s milk industry.
It is imperative that drastic measures should be taken to end this thorny situation, such as enacting related law to reinforce our supervisal mechanism to avoid the behavior of kicking the ball when something bad happen and promoting social entities to regain one of Chinese traditional virtues, which is called “who would enter the hell if I wouldn’t”, that means, undoubtedly, to learn to be responsible for the blunder means sensible Unflinchingness.

Write an essay of 160-200 words based on the following drawing. In your essay, you should:
1) describe the drawing briefly,
2) explain its intended meaning, and then
3) state your point of view./give your comments.

The illustration depicts four hands holding together in the center of the map of china, with “United as the Great Wall, making anything rather small” on the both sides of the picture. Recently, people from all walks of life concern the victims in the Wenchuan Earthquake.
It is conspicuously indicated that love combined all the Chinese together and assist the Wenchuan victims to overcome the difficulties. We are the brothers and exert our efforts to rebuild the homelands of the Wenchuan victims.
In a increasingly harmonious society, the phenomenon to show love is sufficient. A family or a single person in disasters can not accomplish the task without the help of the others. It is the love based on complementary advantages that will contribute to ultimate success of a person or a organization. Numerous examples can demonstrate the power of the love. In the Wenchuan Earthquake, people from all over the world collect the fund for them to fly over the dilemmas. Were there no love, we will can not witness a harmonious society in all round way.

Major Causes for Economic Globalization (1)

Since the early 1950s, economic globalization has undergone a rapid growth. To put it simply, the major causes are as follows:
To begin with, there is the technological reason. Remarkable development in science and technology has paved the way with richer materials and better skills, among which electronic products and information technology play important roles。
In the second place, there is the economic cause. As the market economy holds a stronger position, multinational corporations and international economic organizations are becoming more and more popular and powerful, thus laying a solid foundation for the globalization of our economy. (97 words)

Main Reasons for Economic Globalization (2)
Since the early 1950s, economic globalization has seen a rapid growth. In my opinion, there are two main reasons for this development。
Firstly, technology has played a very important role. Electronic products and information technology have become so popular and powerful that productivity has been greatly promoted all over the world。
Secondly, changes in economy itself lay a solid foundation. The market economy, multinational companies and international economic organizations all develop so well that they contribute respectively to the globalization of our economy. (83 words)

范文1 "Good Health"
1.身体健康的重要性。 2.保持健康的途径。 3.我自己的实践。
              Good Health
The desire for good health is universal. In our competitive society it is important to maintain good health. On the one hand, people with good health can do work with full confidence and their progress in work in turn contributes to their health and happiness. On the other hand, a sick person is usually not interested in everything around him and therefore he loses many opportunities to become successful.
There are many ways to keep it. First, those who are always on the go from morning till night should find time to relax because too much stress will affect their health. Second, enough time should be left for sleep because that will help one become rested and refreshed. Finally, regular physical exercises benefit one's health a lot. So one should always keep in mind that a certain amount of exercise is not a waste of time.
As for me, I like playing tennis in the morning. I also attach much importance to enough sleep and relaxation. I believe this will ensure my good health for the rest of my life.

2 Hope Project

Education plays a very important role in the modernization of our country. However, because of historical factors, there are still a lot of people in China who are undereducated, especially among youngsters in rural areas. They cannot afford the expenses of schooling and need help. At the same time, China is not able to invest too much money in the matter at present time. It is in this particular situation that the authorities carry out the "Hope Project ".
This project is necessary to our country. It is an urgent measure that the government has taken. In the first place, this project will provide conditions for the youngsters to go back to school, which will contribute to their future success. Thus it will lead to the enhancement of the intelligence level in our country. Secondly, education makes it possible for people to acquire knowledge, which is useful to their future work. Hence, this Project benefits the modernization of our country a lot. Finally, it can make more people educated. Therefore, it may indirectly result in the increase of the living standards of our people.
In my opinion, this project is of great importance to our country at the present time. And it also will have a profound effect on the future achievements of our country. I suggest that more work be done so that every child in the countryside can receive elementary education.

范文3 Modernizing China

Modernization will bring a number of benefits to the people of China. Advancements in science and technology will result in better industrial and consumer products. New roads, trucks and trains will improve transportation for both people and goods. With new health care methods people will live happier and longer.
However, modernization also gives rise to a number of new problems. Pollution of the air, ground, and water has become a serious problem in many parts of China. An increase in vehicles on the roads has also resulted in more traffic accidents, injuries and deaths.
We can, however, deal with these problems if we are careful. We can train many environmental scientists who can help factories operate cleanly. We can pass new laws to regulate our traffic more safely. Finally, we must expand our education system to prepare better educated people for tomorrow.

4 Population Control

Progress in science and the improvement of living conditions have led to the rapid growth of the world population. Modern medicine, for example, has made it possible for babies to grow up healthily and for people to live longer. With improved living conditions, particularly in the countryside, people tend to have larger families. As a result, the world population has increased so rapidly that it has now exceeded 6 billion.
But the overgrowth of population presents a threat to the existence of human society. A large population demands a great deal of food supply and shelter space. However, limited productivity and scarce world resources can hardly meet the needs of the ever-increasing population. Thus, in the long run, the overgrowth of the world population will only harm mankind.
To guarantee the steady development of human society, mankind must realize the consequences resulting from fast population growth and carry out a family planning programme. Only by adopting effective measures, can human society develop steadily and have a bright future.

5 Controlling Cancer

There are two main causes of cancer: heredity and environment. We can do nothing to change our heredity, that is, the basic physical characteristics that were passed on to us by our parents. However, we can do a great deal to control our environment, which may account for 80-90 %of all cancers.
Environmental pollution can be divided into two kinds: personal and impersonal. Personal pollution may be defined roughly as unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking, and eating the wrong foods. Clearly, with enough will power we can control this personal environment.
Impersonal pollution, on the other hand, refers to those things which are beyond our individual control. One example would be industrial pollution, which is very hard to control because of the expense involved. It would be expensive in terms of profits and perhaps jobs. The American automobile industry, for example, resisted the law requiring smog-control devices because it feared the added expense would reduce profits. Nevertheless, some laws protecting the environment have been quite successful in reducing pollution.

6 Equality Between Men and Women

At present, more and more people think that men and women should enjoy equal rights. Many countries even have passed laws to guarantee such an equality between different sexes. Accordingly, there are now no longer certain jobs or certain places that are closed to women. The number of business women, female doctors, scientists and leaders is considerably increasing.
There are three main reasons for the improvement of women's social position. First, women themselves have been persistently struggling for equality. Second, men also realize that women are not born inferior to them. Women can do a great many things as well as or even better than men. Third, social development has produced a great demand for women's participation in every field.
In spite of these changes the liberation of women has not been completely realized. Prejudice against women is deeply rooted still in some people's mind, especially in distant rural areas. So, mankind should take further painstaking efforts to really realize equality.

<评析> 本文过渡词使用较好。文章的第二段,就是非常典型的用first, second, third为次序词从三方面进行论证的例子。

范文7 Getting to Know the World outside the Campus

Getting to Know the World outside the Campus
With the rapid development of our society, the campus is no longer an "Ivory Tower". Students must get in touch with the world outside the campus so that they can adapt themselves to society more quickly when they graduate.
Almost all students keep themselves informed by TV, radio broadcasts and newspapers. Some of them even take up a part-time job in their spare time. Working as tutors, serving in some fast-food restaurants… All these have kept students in touch with society.
Now the summer vacation will come and I've already found myself a job-working as a typist in an office. I've learned typing for many years and I think I can do it well. It's a good chance for me to get to know society, to learn how to get along with my colleagues and to see how my knowledge is put into practise. When the next semester begins, I'll still try to get this kind of little job. Regardless of the pay, I think the most important thing is that I can really know a lot about society.

第一段中有"get in touch with the world outside the campus",第二段末尾有"get in touch with the society",第三段中有"get to know the society",段尾又有"know a lot about the society",四次重复出现关键词点出文章的主旨所在。

范文8 Human Beings and Animals

Human beings are different from animals in many ways. One of the differences is the ability of human beings to build. It is true that many animals are builders. Birds make nests, and bees make hives. But no animal could build the pyramids or the Great Wall or the Eiffel Tower. The variety, size, and beauty of the structures built by human beings is simply unsurpassed.
Another difference is the ability of human beings to use intelligence. Many animals are probably more clever than we realize, but no animal has the ability to write, to reason, or to speak. Only human beings can invent computers, make use of solar energy. Only human beings paint, draw, compose music, and write poetry.
These are but a few of the differences between human beings and animals. It is our special abilities that give us power to affect the world for the benefit of all mankind. We should be thankful for those abilities and learn to use them in a more wise way.

Title: Different Social Customs Between Americans and Chinese
Key words and expressions:

2) difference, in a conversation, coat, cost, impolite, age, politics, religion, avoid
3) many other, keep…in mind, better, understand

Different Social Customs Between Americans and Chinese

Social customs differ in different parts of the world. If we don't realize this, misunderstanding may arise between people that behave differently. In the United States, people are very informal in social situations. For example, they call each other by their given names when two people first meet. So do the young to the old. In China, it would be regarded quite impolite to do so.
Another difference is about what can be talked about in a conversation. A Chinese thinks nothing of being asked how much his coat cost while Americans think it impolite to ask such a question. A Chinese woman doesn't care if she is asked about her age. Politics, religions, as well as incomes are often talked about among Chinese. But in the United States these kinds of subjects are usually avoided in conversation.
Since there are many other different social customs between Americans and Chinese, the way that we behave and what we talk about requires our attention. If we keep these in mind, we will do it better and understand each other better.

范文10 To Learn English Well By Speaking More

Many Chinese students who have learned English for more than ten years are still unable to speak English fluently when they meet a foreigner. They seem to have mastered the basic language structure, but a conversation in English will make them feel uneasy. They are afraid that other people might find out their mistakes.
It is not uncommon that many students, who are bad speakers of English, can write English perfectly. This proves that they are not able to organize their ideas in English. The center of the problem is that they lack practice and confidence.
Why should you be afraid? Do you fear those foreigners with whom you are speaking? Don't be shy, they will not laugh at you just for a small mistake you have made. The best way to get rid of this trouble is to learn to speak by speaking more. I am sure that constant practice will help you to succeed.

Are Prizes a Good Thing?
Nobody denies that competitions with prizes can bring people's initiative into full play. Encouraged by a strong desire to win a prize, one will go all out to seek his greatest success. Consequently, the best achievements will be obtained in a game with awards. However, the prompting of a prize does not always lead to desirable results. For example, a competitor who cannot overcome the temptation of a prize is likely to take a stimulant .And the hopeless competitor sees nothing but the prize, which might cause improper behavior. I my opinion, the remedy lies in moral education of competitors. This will help them to understand the slogan: "Friendship--first, and competition--second. "Then, prices will play a better part in any contest. Generally speaking, I believe that prizes are a good thing.

On Keeping a Diary in English
Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability. Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes less time. It can help us to cultivate the habit of thinking in English. If we persist in this practice, gradually we'll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we inevitably run up against a lot of difficulties .In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble finding appropriate words and phases to give expression to our mind. Secondly , there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. Certainly, there are some other roadblocks we may come across in our keeping a diary in English. As far as I'm concerned, my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills.

On University Tuition System in China
Tuition system has become one of the hottest topics in China since it was put into effect. Different people have different opinions on it. Some people think that there is no university in the world which is open to students without tuition. As far as China is concerned, it is a developing country with the largest population in the world. The government is unable to allocate enough funds to pay for various teaching facilities and many different kinds of expenses. One of the ways to relieve the problem is for students to pay tuition. The money raised in this way can be used to improve the conditions for running schools. Others ,however, are opposed to the tuition system. They argue that the living standard of the Chinese people ,especially of those in the poor rural areas, is still low, compared with that in the Western World. The university tuition will certainly add to the already heavy burden of the parents, who live on their salaries or wages. Moreover, tuition may become an obstacle to the development of China's higher education. This is because it hinders some talented people from entering the university just on account of their poverty.

Opportunity and Success
Opportunities don't come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore ,it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care. When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitious, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose.

Private car
Outline: 1)Advantages of owning a private car. 2)Disadvantages of owning a private car. 3)Should it be necessary to enlarge the private car market? Why or why not?

Nowadays, any Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car - if he or she can afford it. Having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can drop off the children at school on the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains do not go, and so you can find a quiet scenic spot with no crowds.
However, there are drawbacks to owning a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey to work more of a nightmare than a dream. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, as the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the prices you have to pay for a licence and insurance coverage.
Having considered both sides of the argument, I have come to the conclusion that the advantages of owning a car outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, it seems to me that China should increase its output of automobiles and enlarge the private car market. The result would be that cars would become cheaper, while at the same time the extra demand would encourage the auto industry to produce more efficient and family-oriented vehicles.

On Developing Tourism
Tourism, a "smokeless industry", is developing rapidly in China. With the open and reform policy being carried out, thousands upon thousands of foreign visitors are crowding into our country. The are eager to see this old mysterious land with a splendid culture of more than 5000 years. Tourism brings China a lot of benefits. First it enables the Chinese people to know more about the outside world and promotes friendship and mutual understanding. Second , it is financially beneficial to China, which needs more foreign currencies for its modernization program. Tourism, however, gives rise to a number of problems. For instance, it becomes a burden to our inefficient transportation system. Besides, the living standard of the average Chinese is still not high enough to be able to afford the many different sorts of expenses during long distance travels. As for me, I believe that with the development of our national economy, all these problems will certainly be solved step by step. A much better and brighter future awaits.

The Value of Time
As a popular saying goes, "Time is money. "In fact, time is more precious than money. When money is spent, you can earn it back if you want to. However, when time is gone, it will never come back. As the pace of modern life continues to accelerate ,the time at our disposal is quite limited. But there are a lot of things to be done in our lives. We should make full use of our time to fulfil what is useful to us. For instance, as students we should devote most of our time to our
academic studies. In this way we can acquire new knowledge and skill necessary for our future carrier. In my opinion, wasting time means wasting our valuable life. But many of us don't realize this .They think time is inexhaustable. I'm
not in favor of such of a view .Hence ,my conclusion is that we should never put off what can be today until tomorrow.

Read Extensively

Reading plays a very important part in human life. Every day we get in touch with reading something. We have a lot of things to read in our lives, such as books, magazines, newspapers, and even advertisement papers distributed everywhere. Through reading we can get a lot of useful information, for example, the latest news of our country and the world.
Nevertheless, people's interests in reading vary considerably. Some people like reading novels. Some people like reading essays. Some other people may prefer reading magazines or newspapers. Here, what I want to emphasize is that no matter what you are interested in, you should read extensively.
I have my reasons for it. First, we are living in a society full of information. We should make ourselves well- informed in order to keep up with the steps of our society. Reading extensively is an efficient method of acquiring information. Second, we need many kinds of skills in our lives. Reading extensively can help us learn those skills so that we can live more comfortably in the world. The more extensively you read, the more skills you can get. Third, we have a lot of decisions to make each day. Sometimes, we may feel difficult to make a correct decision. Reading extensively can help you understand the world you live in, and therefore, help you to make a clever decision in a difficult situation. Fourth, reading extensively can help you enlarge the range of your knowledge so that you can communicate with others more freely. You will find something to say when you talk with your friends no matter what topic you are talking about.
There are some other advantages of reading extensively. Because of the significance of extensive reading, you should begin to do so immediately. If you have determined to read extensively from now on, you are sure to be able to find a lot of books you are interested in, and the time to read them. Your life will become much more meaningful and substantial than before.

Today's Luxuries Are Tomorrow's Necessities
By "luxury", we mean "a pleasant and often expensive thing that is not necessary". From a historical point of view, things which Were a luxury when they first came into being all became necessities later. When the electric bulb was first invented in the U.S., it was such a luxury that only government bodies could afford to use it. Nowadays, however, it has reached every part of the world. It is the same case with telephone, TV, and a lot of others, which were all luxuries years ago.
Anything, no matter how luxurious it is, will become a necessity when it is widely used. This is true of many of the present luxuries, including mobile phones, cars, computers and many other things. It is known to all that the purpose of the development of science is to make things easy for the mankind, not for only a small number of people. Therefore, the first thing to do after a new invention occurs is to spread it so as to benefit as many people as possible. In the course of the spread, the luxury becomes decreasingly luxurious until in the end it becomes a necessity. This is an objective law, nothing can be an exception.
